If you want to know why I went with these options please feel free to read on, but be warned major spoilers follow – first time viewers – DON’T read any further. I tried to make it into some kind of ‘infographic’: This brings me to my opinion (feel free to post your own) on how I think a first time viewer of Babylon 5 should proceed. Given that, there’s still a little debate how some of the extra media (Crusade, TV movies, etc) should fit into the first viewing. The simplest option is to watch the whole thing (admittedly, warts and all). This is all well and good, but what each person considers “important” or not varies tremendously. The other thing you will find, are sites where they wax lyrical about skipping episodes of the show to remove the “standalone” episodes and keep to the major story arcs. In particular, jamming the standalone movie “The River of Souls” and failed pilot “The Legend of the Rangers” in before S5E22 “Sleeping in Light” – adds little to the core “Babylon 5” story and dilutes the impact of the series final episode. Some people coming to watch Babylon 5 will have heard things about the show having character development and story arcs. It expanded beyond the original show, to include TV movies, a cancelled spin-off show and a pilot movie for a further show that didn’t get picked up. While Babylon 5 isn’t a TV franchise the size of Star Trek, Stargate or Doctor Who, it developed beyond the “5 Year Novel” it was intended to be. Is an understandable question for first time viewers.
